For those of you who aren't football fans, this weekend was the NFL Draft. Rather than give you a grading of each team, I'm just going to hit the highlights of the Draft and the fallout that has taken place this week.
The best story line of the week was Teddy Bridgewater getting picked with the No. 32 pick to the Minnesota Vikings who traded up to get him. Bridgewater's mom is battling breast cancer and after telling a tear-jerking story about how when he got to the NFL he would buy her a pink Cadillac Escalade, Cadillac donated the car to Bridgewater's mother. Being a first round pick, Bridgewater easily could have afforded it, without the donation. With it being Mother's Day Weekend on top of this whole drama, it made it even more special. Even if he doesn't pan out as a viable QB, it's hard not to root for a guy like that.
1. Johnny Football goes to Cleveland
Everyone, including me on Draft night wanted JFF to go to Dallas. Not because it would have been a good move strategically, but because it would have been a media circus in Jerry's World. The Cowboys pass for just that reason and Johnny goes to The Dawg Pound. We'll see if Cleveland has found their QB, but the jersey sales have been skyrocketing since Thursday. They need to just name him the starter. The odds of true QB competition are about the same as it was when Andrew Luck was drafted by Indy. It's going to be fun to watch.
2. NFL drafts first openly gay player
It's historic, period. 10 years ago this would have been shocking. 20 years ago it would have been unheard of. Everyone knows that there have been gay players in every sport, but if you don't think it's historic, how do you explain people who have never watched a football game watching the 7th round of the NFL draft. Michael Sam goes to a team close to home but he goes to a very good defensive line, and is going to see limited time at best. There's been plenty of talk about the reaction after he was chosen by the Rams, so I'll refrain from commenting. What it comes down to now is: can Sam be an impact player for the Rams?
3. Thank the good Lord the Panthers drafted Kony Ealy in the 2nd Round
This week has not been kind to Greg Hardy (aka Da Kraken). The Panthers take a top tier DE in the 2nd round of the draft, when everyone including me, thought they would take an OT. Hardy was arrested after alleging assaulting his girlfriend in his Charlotte apartment. The details are not good. After Rae Carruth, Jerry Richardson isn't going to put up with that, especially from a guy who wants to be paid north of $12 million per season. Regardless of what happens, Hardy likely won't be a Panther in 2015.
4. The Oakland Raiders actually had a decent draft
The Raiders get Khalil Mack, who many thought would replace Clowney as the #1 overall pick. They also get their QB of the future in Derek Carr out of Fresno State. Schaub will likely play most of the 2014 season, but if he starts out like he did 2013, we may see David Carr's little brother sooner than we thought.
5. The Jaguars waive goodbye to Justin Blackmon
You think Greg Hardy is having a bad week? It's nothing compared to the week Justin Blackmon is having in Jacksonville. The Jaguars took Blake Bortles, Marqise Lee, and Allen Robinson in the Draft with their first 3 picks. Then later in the week the Jaguars staff was seen cleaning out Blackmon's locker. The owner simply stated it's a tragedy and it truly is for the 2012 No. 5 overall pick. The Jaguars are clearly moving on from the last few years and that's a very good thing.
This draft had a lot of excitement. There's always some surprises and I've been glued to NFL Network for the last month. Like a lot of people, I'm ready for football to grace us with its presence once again.
