Championship Saturday & SEC Bowl Projections

Ok before we get started on games, December 5th is Krampus Day.  Krampus is basically the Alpine nightmare counter to Santa Claus, who wreaks havoc upon naughty children.  He is very popular in Germany, Austria, and parts of Switzerland, where they hold Krampusnacht, whereby people dressed as Krampus, fueled by schnapps and beer, parade up and down the streets terrorizing those who have been terrible human beings this year.  Look for him tonight outside the athletic departments of Georgia and LSU.  


So, now that you won't be able to sleep this evening, let's take a look at the Championship games being played today and where each SEC Team might be headed.

SEC Championship

Florida
Alabama   -17

If Alabama loses this game, its because the game is officially fixed.  I feel like this Bama team could run the ball 75 times and never throw it and still cover the spread against Florida.  Florida might be the worst 10-2 power 5 team in college football right now.  They've struggled ever since Will Grier has had to sit out, barely beating Florida Atlantic and getting destroyed by Florida State.  I think Derrick Henry runs for at least 150 yards today and Bama wins 31-6.

PAC 12 Championship

USC
Stanford     -4

Stanford absolutely gritted out a win against Notre Dame last week.  They've got 2 losses this year; one against Northwestern in the first game of the year, and the other against Oregon.  They play good defense and run the ball well.  USC lost to Stanford 41-31 this year at home, and I know it's difficult to beat a team twice in one year, but I just think Stanford is better than USC and gets a win tonight in Santa Clara 27-20.

ACC Championship

North Carolina
Clemson     -4.5

While the ACC Championship game has been somewhat of a joke lately, this is a dream match up for Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.  You get the two biggest programs in North and South Carolina meeting in Charlotte, with the winner likely going to the College Football Playoff.   Despite the people in love with Ohio State, I think if Carolina wins they'll go to the playoff.  They'd have beaten the No. 1 team in the country and finished 11-1 with their only loss coming at a neutral site in the first game of the year.  I've gone back and forth on this game all week, including this morning.  I'd like to see UNC win and chaos ensue, but I think Clemson has too much talent and wins this one in a close game.  Clemson 34 UNC 31.

B1G TEN Championship

Michigan State         -3.5
Iowa

Iowa finished the regular season 12-0 and Michigan State's only loss came to Nebraska, but they have quality wins over Michigan and Ohio State.  Clearly, the winner of this game is going to the College Football Playoff.  Kirk Ferentz was on the hot seat at the beginning of this year, and he then proceeds to go out and wins every game.  While, the B1G TEN West is not exactly the toughest division in college football, it's still impressive to go 12-0.  This game should be old school football with tough defense and a commitment to the run.  I like Iowa, but I think Michigan State has better talent and a better coach, so I'm going with Sparty to get the win 20-16.

SEC Week 12 Predictions

There is nothing like a dream to create the future.  That dream, the dream of a National Championship resting in Baton Rouge this year is all but over, and now the LSU Fighting Tigers look to salvage their season in Oxford.   But a new dream has emerged; that of a new coach to lead the Bayou Bengals back to glory as Les Mileserables throne begins to warm.  As the Mad Hatter holds his court he asks, "Is it true that I am to be released?"  The LSU faithful can only wonder, "God knows how I've lasted living with this bastard in the house!"  While releasing him might not be the wisest of decisions, fear naught LSU, for even the darkest night will end and the sun will rise.

This week in the SEC sees only a couple decent games, with the Bayou Bengals heading north to home of William Faulkner, and the Bulldogs of Starkvegas heading to Walmart U, where Arkansas suddenly looks like a tough out for anyone.  The season is almost coming to an end with only 2 weeks left of regular season games, so let's take a look at Week 12.

FAU
at Florida   -30.5

The FAU Owls are 2-8, while the Gators sit at 9-1.  The outcome has already been decided, but what people are really interested in is whether or not Florida will cover, or will they sleepwalk through the game looking to FSU next week.  I think McElwain has got the Gators focused to get as many wins as possible as they hope to knock off Alabama in the SEC Championship to slide into the College Football Playoff.  They'll take care of business against the Fighting Archimedes and cover.  Florida 45 FAU 10.

The Citadel
at South Carolina

There's not really a line for this game.  So, let's just keep this one brief.  South Carolina wins.  It's a game no one outside the Palmetto State really cares about.  South Carolina goes to 4-8 before they get trounced by Clemson next week.   South Carolina 34 Citadel 17.

LSU
at Ole Miss   -6.5

The CBS game of the week sees the Fighting Tigers head to Oxford to take on the Rebels in the Magnolia Bowl.  I've been to this game the last 2 years, the 2013 game being one of utter jubilation followed by confusion.

While, the 2014 game was one of awkward silence as I walked from Tiger Stadium to my car and drove back to New Orleans as fast as possible....thanks Bo Wallace.

But, this year I'll be watching from my home with my wife, an LSU fan.  That should be interesting.  Both the Rebels and Tigers are coming off losses to an Arkansas team they were favored against, and have seen their seasons crushed like one of Rust Cohle's beer cans.

If LSU is going to win this game, it's going to win it on the arms and legs of Brandon Harris.  They've become one dimensional and when they've been unable to run the ball as they have the last 2 weeks, they're incapable of scoring. Ole Miss will do the same thing Alabama and Arkansas did and stack the box against Forunette, and while he'll have a better game than he did against Alabama and Arkansas, I'm not sure that he runs for 200 yards against the Ole Miss front line.  But based on the luck Ole Miss has had this year, I'm going with the Tigers to get a last second win in Oxford.

I think the game comes down to the last drive the way it has the last couple of years.  Les Miles losing 3 games in a row doesn't sound like a strong possibility.  I hope I'm wrong and Ole Miss wins in a blowout, but after that crazy loss to Arkansas I think this team feels a lot like they did after the loss to Auburn last year, which isn't good.  Even with 2 weeks to prepare, they'd need to win out and Bama to lose the Iron Bowl to go to Atlanta and unless Cam Newton's under center for Auburn, that ain't happening.  LSU 34 Ole Miss 31.

Charleston Southern
at Alabama    -38.5

Nick Saban was not happy when reporters asked him how much playing time some of his younger players were going to get in this game.  The Tide should win this game and cover 52-7.  But, the big story this week revolved around rumors that if Charlies Strong heads to Miami, would Texas make another run at Saban, and even if they don't, does Saban look to head to Indy to join Andrew Luck and the Colts with full autonomy in a Belichick like role.  The Tide faithful sure are hoping they're just rumors, because they're starting to get nervous that their beloved coach may leave Tuscaloosa.

Idaho
at Auburn   -34

The Vandals head to The Plains this weekend to take on a resurgent Auburn team that will get bowl eligible this week.   It's pretty evident the Tigers will get to 6-5 this week before the Iron Bowl, but I'm not sure they cover against Paul Petrino's Vandals.  The Vandals have been giving up a ton of points lately, but I think they'll be able to score enough to cover the spread.  Auburn pulls away in the 2nd half, and wins 42-17.

Mississippi State
at Arkansas   -5

Arkansas has been baffling this year.  They've lost games to Toledo and Texas Tech, and then they've beaten Ole Miss and LSU.  Mississippi State on the other hand has been pretty consistent; they've beaten the teams they're supposed to and lost to teams most analysts expected.  Fayetteville is a tough place to go to and get a win, and right now Brandon Allen might be having the best QB play of anyone in the conference.  State will put up a much better fight than they did last week, but I think Arkansas still gets a win at home and covers, 35-28.

Georgia Southern
at Georgia   -13

Georgia Southern is a good football team.  While the Bulldogs likely aren't in too much danger of losing this game, the 13 point line shows that Vegas respects the Eagles.  Georgia Southern runs the triple option, which means the Bulldogs will see the this offense for 2 straight weeks, as they face Georgia Tech next week, and that offense is tough to defend.  This game is close for a while, but Georgia scores a late touchdown to barely cover the spread.  Georgia 35 Georgia Southern 21.

Tennessee     -6
at Missouri    

Mizzou won last week based largely off emotion.  They won't be as lucky this week when the Vols come to town.  While Mizzou could get bowl eligible on Saturday night, they'll likely have to wait another week.  Tennessee didn't exactly dominate North Texas 2 weeks ago, or South Carolina the week before, but they still got wins, and they've had 2 weeks to prepare for Missouri.  Josh Dobbs will have his work cutout for him, but I think the Vols are just the better team.  They get a win in a hostile environment on a cold November night, and Mizzou will head to Arkansas next week needing a win to get to a bowl.  Vols 28 Tigers 20.

UNC Charlotte
at Kentucky    -24.5

Kentucky will get 1 game closer to bowl eligibility this week against Charlotte.  The 49ers have only 2 wins this season, and have lost 8 in row, while Kentucky has dropped their last 5 games. Mark Stoops's Wildcats will win, but I'm not a believer in them covering a spread of 24.5 points against anyone, even a bad UNC Charlotte team.  A big factor could be the weather, with a 70% chance of rain/snow and temperatures that could dip down around freezing, so I think that could keep the score lower than it normally might be.   Wildcats 27 49ers 13.

Texas A&M    -6
at Vanderbilt   

Derek Mason has done a better job than most people expected at Vandy this year.  I thought they'd struggle to get 2 wins, but the Commodores are sitting at 4-6 with an outside chance to make a bowl.  I don't think that'll happen, but I also don't think Texas A&M blows them out in Nashville.  Texas A&M gave all 3 of their QBs starting reps this week, which proves they don't have a QB.  If you're opening up the QB competition in Week 12, when all 3 are healthy, you've got some serious problems.  Despite their issues under center, I think the Aggies are still the more talented team and will get a win in Nashville as they edge out Vandy, but just barely.  Aggies 24 Commodores 21.

SEC Week 11 Predictions

Welp, last week showed us that playing Arkansas during overtime is not a wise decision.  After the 4th and 25 play that has gotten about as much attention in Oxford as the Zapruder film, the Hogs were able to pull off an overtime win on the road to get to 5-4.  Ole Miss dropped to 7-3, and now in a complete twist of irony, will be cheering for the Mississippi State Bulldogs to upset the Crimson Tide, to keep their hopes of getting to Atlanta alive.

In the rest of the SEC, Leonard Fournette found kryptonite in the name of the Alabama defense, as the Tigers lost to the Tide 30-16.  The real star of the show was Derrick Henry, who rushed for 210 yards and 3 Touchdowns.  He may have jumped Fournette as the front runner for the Heisman with that performance.  Auburn got back on track as they jumped up to 5-4 with a win over Texas A&M.  On the other side of the conference in the SEC East, Florida clinched a trip to Atlanta, after sleepwalking through 3 1/2 quarters against Vandy, but the Gators just aren't the same without Will Grier.  No matter who they face out of the West, they'll likely be an underdog. To close out the rest of the SEC, Georgia took care of business against a Kentucky team that needs to win 2 of its last 3 to get to a bowl, and Tennessee outlasted South Carolina 27-24 in Knoxville.

This week sees a rematch of the Prayer at Jordan-Hare, with Georgia headed to Auburn.  Bama heads to Starkvegas in a game that could decide who goes to Atlanta, and Arkansas heads to Baton Rouge in the Battle for the Golden Boot.  So, let's get to some games!

Georgia
at Auburn   Even

The Deep South's Oldest Rivalry kicks off at noon today on CBS.  It's likely that both Malzahn and Richt will play multiple QBs in this game, so that makes it even less predictable.  If this game was in Athens I'd go with Georgia, but being that it's on The Plains, I'm going with the Tigers to win a close game.  Jeremy Johnson looked a lot better against Texas A&M, and Georgia has struggled against almost every SEC team not named Kentucky this year.   Auburn pulls out a close victory 27-24.

Florida    -7.5
at South Carolina

The Battle for Steve Spurrier's Heart takes place in Columbia today.  Florida clinched the SEC East last week, despite a weak performance against Vandy, while South Carolina gave Tennessee a scare in Knoxville.  If Florida wants to go to more than just the Sugar Bowl they're going to have to keep winning and I think they'll continue that today in Columbia.   This game will ultimately come down to talent and Florida has more of it than the Gamecocks.  They'll play conservative and rely on running the ball and their defense, but that should be enough to get the win as the Gamecocks see their postseason hopes come to an end, dropping to 3-7.  Florida 24 South Carolina 16.

North Texas
at Tennessee  -41

41 POINTS!  Normally, I'd say go with North Texas, but after looking a little closer at North Texas, I saw they are 1-8, and they lost 66-7 to Portland State....at Home!  Go with the Vols, to get an easy win in a game that should be over as soon as Tennessee scores the first touchdown.  The Vols get bowl eligible today in a blowout.  Tennessee 55 North Texas 10.

Alabama   -8
at Mississippi State

Alabama took care of business against LSU last week, and they'll head to Starkvegas this week in The Battle of Highway 82.  This is probably one of the quietest rivalries in the SEC, but both teams have some of the most passionate fans in college football, and you can guarantee that the cowbells will be ringing today.  If State hopes to have any chance, they are going to have to throw the ball down the field with accuracy.  Alabama will stack the box and make Dak beat them with his arm.  I think he'll have a good game, but I question whether that Mississippi State defense can stop Henry and the Tide.  Alabama has a 2 score lead late in this game, but State scores a late touchdown to cover the spread.  Alabama 30 Mississippi State 24.

Kentucky
at Vanderbilt   -3

3-6 Vandy hosts a 4-5 Kentucky team, that has lost 4 in a row after starting out 4-1.  The biggest challenge for Kentucky is going to be scoring against that Vandy defense.  With the exception of the Houston game, Vanderbilt hasn't given up 20 points in a game since September.  The problem is Vandy has only scored 20 points in a game once all year.  This game has low scoring defensive struggle written all over it.  Being that it's in Nashville, I'll go with Vandy to get the win.  Vandy 16 Kentucky 13.

Western Carolina
at Texas A&M   -36


The Aggies get back to winning this week against the boys from Cullowhee.  They should dominate the Catamounts in College Station in route to getting to 7-3, but that defense will still give up some points.  Texas A&M wins 48-17.

Arkansas
at LSU   -7

One team is coming off an exhilarating overtime win, while the other is coming off a crushing loss to their rival.  The Battle for the Golden Boot is the 7PM ESPN game live from Death Valley.  Fully understanding this is a Les Miles cliche, but LSU at night in Death Valley...it's where dreams go to die.  Believe me, I saw it last year, first hand.  Fournette was shut down last week against Bama, but he should have a better performance against an Arkansas team that gave up 52 points in Oxford.  The Tigers edge the Hogs to go to 8-1, and Arkansas has to wait another week to get bowl eligible.  LSU 31 Arkansas 24.

BYU   -4.5
at Missouri   

Normally, I'd go with BYU, as Mizzou hasn't given any reason for anyone to show faith in them this year.  But this week has seen all eyes on the campus of the University of Missouri.  After a boycott by the Mizzou football team, and with news coming out yesterday that Gary Pinkel will retire after this year due to health issues, I think this is a game that rests solely on emotion.  The game will be played at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, and I think the "Win this one for Gary" effect gives Mizzou an upset win.  Mizzou 20 BYU 17.


After the horrible events in Paris last night, we could all use a little something to celebrate and make us remember what's fun about life.  Here's to what's hopefully an enjoyable Saturday.  Cheers!

SEC Week 8 Predictions

We're a little over halfway through the regular season, so I thought I'd group each of the SEC Teams into categories of Very Good, Good, Average, and Bad to give some perspective for each of the teams in the SEC.  So let's take a look.

VERY GOOD

ALABAMA      6-1

Bama looks to get stronger each week.  They've found their identity and they'll be favored in every regular season game going forward.  

LSU       6-0

LSU's season rests solely on the legs of Leonard Fournette.  If he's healthy and they run the football well, they're looking at worst at a New Year's Six Bowl.  They've got to go to Tuscaloosa and Oxford before the season ends, but if they can manage that stretch they'll be headed to Atlanta.

FLORIDA     6-1

I think just about everyone was wrong about Florida.  Barring an upset loss to Georgia, it looks like the Gators are going to Atlanta.  They're clearly the best team in the East, and it doesn't even look close right now.  Even without Will Grier, they gave LSU all they could handle in Death Valley.

GOOD

TEXAS A&M       5-1

The Aggies got their first loss of the year when they hopped on the Pick 6 express to Tide Land.  Kyle Allen completed 50% of his passes and threw 3 INTs and Murray wasn't much better going 2 of 4 with an INT.  Still, they have wins against Ark, Arizona State, and Mississippi State.  If they can get that offense clicking again, they'll still finish well.

GEORGIA        5-2

Georgia is off this week, and they'll use the break to prepare for Florida in the World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party.  They looked good at the start of the year, but losses to Bama, Tennessee, and a completely unwatchable win (9-6) against Mizzou have sullied the spirits of the Bulldogs.  Believe it or not, Georgia still controls it's own destiny to get to Atlanta, but they'll have to pull an upset in Jacksonville and win out to make it there.

OLE MISS           5-2

There's no team more schizophrenic in the SEC than Ole Miss.  They go beat Alabama in Tuscaloosa, and then lose on the road to Florida and Memphis.  While Florida and Memphis are good teams, the Rebs still shouldn't have been blown out in both games.  When this team is good, it can beat anyone, and when it's bad, it struggles against even mediocre teams.  The Rebels could win out or lose out and I wouldn't be surprised.  

MISSISSIPPI STATE  5-2

The Bulldogs look like a competent football team, and their ceiling is probably 9-3 if things go their way.  They're not going to go to Atlanta, but they're going to give the teams remaining on their schedule some trouble.  

AVERAGE

TENNESSEE       3-3

The Vols are sitting at .500, which is about where they've hovered for the last few years.  They've got to head to Tuscaloosa this week, and then begin their last stretch of Kentucky, SC, North Texas, Mizzou, and Vandy.  8-4 looks a lot more likely than 6-6, but this team will still wonder what might have been.  

AUBURN              4-2

Auburn is 4-2, but they haven't looked impressive in any game they've played this season.  They needed OT to beat Jacksonville State at home, and barely beat Kentucky last week.  They get Ark, Ole Miss, A&M, Georgia, Idaho, and Bama to close out the year.  They're going to need at least 1 more SEC win to get bowl eligible, and with that schedule it's going to be tough.  

KENTUCKY         4-2

Kentucky is also 4-2, but they have a little easier road to get bowl eligible.  Their remaining schedule is at Mississippi State, Tennessee, at Georgia, at Vandy, Charlotte, and Louisville.  Only one of those games is a guaranteed win, but I think they pull another win somewhere along the way and get to a bowl.  

MISSOURI     4-3

Mizzou is a lot closer than 2-4 than they are to 5-1.  Their only "good win" came against a bad South Carolina team at home.  They barely escaped Arkansas State, and needed a gift to beat UCONN at home 9-6.  They have 4 wins right now, but there's not one more guaranteed win on their schedule as they'll play a pesky Vandy team, Mississippi State, BYU, Tennessee, and finish the year with Arkansas.  7-5 is probably the ceiling for the Tigers this year.  

BAD

ARKANSAS       2-4

The Hogs could easily jump into the next category, if they get some consistent play on offense.  Arkansas played Bama tough for 3 quarters, and pushed Texas A&M to the brink, but they lost both games.  Their only wins are against UTEP and Tennessee.  With Auburn, UT Martin, Ole Miss, LSU, Mississippi State, and Mizzou left on the schedule, they're going to need to pull multiple upsets to get to a bowl.  

SOUTH CAROLINA     3-4

The Gamecocks are already looking to the post-Spurrier era, but they haven't been able to get good QB play all year.  They bounced back last week against Vandy, but they only have 1 guaranteed win going forward.  Hopefully, SC makes the right hire, because Spurrier has left some big shoes to fill.  

VANDERBILT        2-4

Vandy has looked better than most people thought they would, but it is still going to be an uphill battle to make a bowl.  Their defense looks very good, but QB play has plagued them all year.  They can get on the right track with an upset win today against Mizzou.


Now since we've done a recap of the season so far, let's get to the games this week to see how each SEC team will fair in Week 8.

Auburn
at Arkansas    - 6.5

To say this should be a battle is an understatement.  These two coaches and teams HATE each other, and with the dialogue over the summer between these two it should be a fun game to watch.  Fayetteville is a tough place to go up to and win.  With an early kickoff, I'm going with the Hogs to get the win against Auburn in a close one.  Arkansas 28  Auburn 24.

Tennessee
at Alabama   -14.5

It could be a long day for the Vols.  I think Josh Dobbs is going to be running for his life against that Bama defense.   The Vols are going to have to get out to an early lead the way Ole Miss did against Bama if they are going to have any chance.  Bama 41 Tennessee 24.

Missouri  -1
at Vanderbilt

This game is essentially a pick em.  Vandy is the sexy pick here, but I just don't think they'll be good enough to get a win, even against a Mizzou team that has underwhelmed all year.  I'm going with the Tigers to get a win in a game that you should clearly take the under.  Mizzou 14 Vandy 10.

Western Kentucky
at LSU  - 15

As long as Leonard Fournette is healthy, give me the Bayou Bengals to win and cover at home.  The Tigers were tested last week against Florida, but they still managed to get the win.  The threat of a loss is absent this week against a good WKU team this week, but I don't think this one is a blowout.  Get ready for an all day party in Baton Rouge.  LSU 42 WKU 24.

Texas A&M
at Ole Miss   - 5.5

After the last couple of weeks, people think it's amazing that Ole Miss is favored in this game.  The Rebs generally play well at home though under Freeze.  With Tunsil back, hopefully the Rebs can get their running game going.  Look for a lot of sweeps, because the Ole Miss interior offensive line is incapable of blocking.  On the A&M side, it's been mighty quiet in College Station after the loss to Bama.  Is Kyle Allen or Kyler Murray going to start today?  Both of these teams are going to be tense, because the loser is done, while the winner still has a shot to get to Atlanta.  I think this game comes down to a field goal and home field advantage gives the Rebels the edge.  Ole Miss 35 Texas A&M 32.

Kentucky
at Mississippi State  - 12

With this game being at home, give me the Bulldogs.  Kentucky has stumbled against Florida and Auburn at home, when they had a chance to contend for the SEC East.  I don't think they have much a chance in Starkville today.  Bulldogs 30 Kentucky 17.

The Fall is finally in full swing as the weather has cooled off.  Arkansas and Auburn kicks off at Noon ET on the SEC Network, Bama and Tennessee play at 3:30 on CBS with Verne and Gary (if there was ever a time to hit the mute button for 4 hours, here it is), and then Ole Miss and Texas A&M have the prime time game on ESPN at 7.  Enjoy another football Saturday.  Here's to hoping it was better than last week.  Cheers!
