Who's More Incompetent: The NCAA or Ole Miss?

                                                             Courtesy of saturdaydownsouth.com

The last 4 years in Oxford, Mississippi have seem some amazing and exciting football and some equally as amazing and exciting stories coming out of the NCAA investigation, which looks like it will be concluded around the end of Donald Trump's second term.  So, there's a couple questions that circle around the investigation, namely, WHAT IS TAKING SO LONG?

Courtesy of mrwgifs.com

How bad is the NCAA at it's job that it takes 4 years to try and conduct an investigation?  You either have something or you don't at this point.   Wrap it up.

                                                             Courtesy of giphy.com

The NCAA has had questions circling around it for years.  They only have the power that its member schools grant it, and they are desperately trying to show that they are relevant and important to justify their own existence.  Sure, they do a lot of good helping a large number of kids get educations, they may not normally be able to afford, but they also make hundreds of millions if not billions of dollars off the backs of amateur athletes whose hard work and labor generate zero income for them personally.

                                                            Courtesy of washingtonpost.com

Don't believe that the NCAA is a complete for profit enterprise built on exploiting cheap to free labor?  Judge for yourself based on this.  Here's the NCAA's operating budget for 2012-13, nearly four years ago:  $800 million.  Their television and marketing rights are 90% of their budget.  Are they  marketing and televising Division III Swimming and Diving?  No, it's overwhelmingly Division I College Football and Basketball.

                                                         Courtesy of gulflive.com

The Investigation into football in Oxford began in 2013, after initial reports and claims emerged asking how a 7-6 Ole Miss team could land the No. 1 overall player in the nation, Robert Nkemdiche (his brother was already on the team), the No. 1 WR, Laquon Treadwell (his best friend from high school was already on the team), and the No. 1 Offensive Tackle Laremy Tunsil (his younger brother was offered a scholarship the following year and is still on the team)?

All 3 players went in the 1st round of the 2016 NFL Draft.  Do you know where Ole Miss finished in the recruiting rankings the year those players started college?  7th in the nation and 4th in the SEC per Rivals.com.  They finished 4th in their own conference and 3rd in their own division.  So, if they're paying players and finishing 4th in the SEC and 3rd in the SEC West how much are the other schools paying?

It couldn't be that Oxford, Mississippi is a really beautiful and fun place to go to school. It couldn't be that College Game Day, a crew that goes to a different school every week for 20 years, called it the best Game Day experience they've ever had.

They have to be cheating at an unprecedented rate.  Who would ever want to go there?  The answer is a lot more people than you'd think.

                                               Courtesy of SBnation.com

As for the investigation, what the NCAA and many journalists don't seem to be asking is a pivotal question about basic finance?  If Ole Miss is the only school offering benefits in the form of monetary compensation, why are recruits signing with other schools in the same conference and division at a higher rate?  Are the recruits that much in love with the awe of Alabama and LSU or is Ole Miss simply getting outbid?

                                                  Courtesy of whodatzone.com

There are multiple reports from very respected national journalists, that the NCAA has offered immunity to recruits and players at other schools about benefits they may have received from Ole Miss or Ole Miss boosters.  Think about how ridiculous that sounds for a minute.

Imagine if you're a stock broker at a Wall Street firm and you're breaking Securities and Exchange Commission regulations and federal laws everyday at your current job, but the U.S. Attorney's office says we don't care about that, tell us about what happened at the job you were offered, but didn't take.  What did that brokerage firm offer you?  What do they do?  Nothing you tell us can be used against you or your current employer.  It makes no rational sense.

                                                       Courtesy of pbs.com

There are also multiple reports that within the last 6 months an NCAA investigator went into a local Oxford sport's apparel store, and began asking employees of the store about impermissible benefits, namely merchandise that may have been given to recruits and players.  To make matters even more unbelievable, Ole Miss was not only aware of the NCAA going to this store, they sat in the damn parking lot complicit while it was going on.

                                                             Courtesy of postgradproblems.com

In year 4 of the investigation, if you're just now visiting that store, you're clearly fishing.  Oxford isn't a bustling metropolis.  It's a small college town, where you can see just about everything the town has to offer in a relatively short period of time, and that store is arguably the most popular sport's apparel store in North Mississippi, so if the NCAA is just now visiting it, it's because they've officially run out of ideas and are throwing things against the wall to see what sticks.

Courtesy of collegemagazine.com

The bigger issue though is why in the world is the Ole Miss Compliance Department or Athletic Department or anyone who gets a paycheck from The University of Mississippi complicit in this witch hunt of a search for the Holy Grail of Impermissible Benefits? It's completely baffling and illogical to the point of absurdity, that Ole Miss is literally trying to help the party who has set up shop in Oxford for 4 years and spent millions of dollars to try and prove you did something wrong and your players got some impermissible benefits.

                                                        Courtesy of motherjones.com

You know which top level football recruits get extra benefits?  NEARLY ALL OF THEM.   If you don't believe that then you need to stop watching Division 1 College Football and get season tickets to the local Community College's Intramural Ultimate Frisbee games.

For example, here's a 2015 article from USA Today regarding Heisman Trophy Winner Derrick Henry and this car, that he posted on his Instagram account that was supposedly given to him in 2014 and registered in his Middle School Football Coach's name.  When asked about the car, J.T. Medley, the registered owner of the vehicle, said Henry's parents and another football coach of Henry's paid for the car.  So why is it registered in Medley's name if he didn't pay for the car and isn't using it?

It's not what you did, but what the NCAA can prove you did that matters.  Anyone with a basic objective view point knows that star college athletes all get something extra.  It happens at every major Power 5 program across the country, from Iowa State to Indiana to Oregon to Alabama to Virginia Tech.  They all do it.  So why hasn't Ole Miss fought back?

                                                          Courtesy of fineartamerica.com

The University Mississippi made the inexcusable decision to hire In-House Counsel, rather than going and hiring a reputable law firm in Jackson, Memphis, New Orleans, or Nashville to handle this case.  Last time I looked at the wall in my office, Ole Miss has a law school, a pretty good one at that, and I personally know a number of Ole Miss Law School graduates who could have done far better than the person who was put in charge of this debacle of an investigation.

The University has essentially rolled over and taken punch after punch from the NCAA, allowing multiple leaks to the press, while watching its recruiting class get decimated, (they are currently 71st on Rivals.com) and listening to how every other program fighting for recruits against Ole Miss is negatively recruiting against them.   You know who's ahead of Ole Miss in recruiting right now?  Kansas and Purdue.

There are multiple reports that a highly ranked QB who is searching for a program in the SEC has said that other programs are talking about a 3-4 year bowl ban and 15-20 scholarship reductions for Ole Miss.  3-4 Years!  After what happened to USC with much worse evidence, and what didn't happen to Auburn, or UNC, or Miami, or Oklahoma State, this reeks of ridiculousness.  The NCAA has shown a propensity to take their time reviewing hours of testimony gathered from several meetings with a handful of people while a program suffers in the background.

                                                         Courtesy of fanpop.com

Perhaps the NCAA should make a consolidated effort in the near future to restructure their guidelines with a more reasonable set of rules that don't punish a school for letting a player sleep on a coach's couch for the night, but turn a blind eye when there's illustrative evidence that a player or his family got a car or a significant sum of money immediately after signing his letter of intent with a school.  The selective prosecution that exists, whereby the NCAA picks and chooses it's victims at it's own whim acting as judge, jury, and executioner, edges closer and closer to the line of outright corruption.  If you don't believe that, take a look at this empirical evidence of swift justice handed down to the Southeastern Conference by the NCAA in the last 6 years.

Courtesy of zimbio.com

2010:  Cam Newton had the fastest eligibility review ever recorded, while playing QB at Auburn, after being declared illegible and then subsequently eligible in the same week before the SEC Championship game, despite an admission by his father that he shopped his son in a pay for play proposal around to schools in the SEC.

                                                                Courtesy of gamedayr.com

2013:  The NCAA had clear and convincing evidence Johnny Manziel was "distributing" his own autographed merchandise, which was subsequently sold for profit while playing QB at Texas A&M and he had to sit out half a game...against Rice.

                                                    Courtesy of foxsports.com

2014:  An Alabama booster was selling autographed merchandise in his Tuscaloosa clothing store from current and former players and the University of Alabama got a warning.  No players served any suspensions.

                                                              Courtesy of yahoosports.com

2016:  Tennessee settled a sexual assault lawsuit largely centered around the football program for millions of dollars, and they aren't being hit with any bowl ban or penalties for their football program.

So, that brings us to which party is more culpable for their incompetence at this point, and it's clearly Ole Miss.  The hand-holding, cooperative, weak-minded response that The University of Mississippi has displayed during the last 4 years has been down right embarrassing.  If they had any sense of self-awareness and understanding, they'd have told the NCAA to go pound sand the second they set foot in Oxford.  When the NCAA investigators showed up in 2013, Ross Bjork and Hugh Freeze should have been on the phone with the best litigators within a day's drive and lawyered up, the same way Auburn did in 2010.

Unless the NCAA wraps this thing up by Christmas, and it doesn't look like they're going to, the In-House Counsel for Ole Miss should either resign or be fired for ineffective assistance of counsel, because no rational attorney in their right mind would let this matter go on this long, despite what happened on Draft Night with Laremy Tunsil.  You don't hire a Compliance and Administrative Attorney when someone is coming for blood.  You hire trial attorneys who know how to put pressure on big corporations and defend their clients.  Johnny Manziel/Texas A&M and Cam Newton/Auburn both hired the same law firm out of Birmingham and their cases had swift and positive resolutions for their players and schools.

                                             Courtesy of nbccollegefootballtalk.com

Additionally, Ross Bjork, who by all accounts has done a great job as an Athletic Director (with the obvious exception of this) should be on the phone with SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey daily trying to get this matter resolved, and if he's not then he's not doing his job.  Mike Slive never would have let this go on this long for any program in the Southeastern Conference.

Ole Miss has remained largely silent throughout this process, and it's likely because they've worked out some type of deal with the NCAA, but it's abundantly apparent that the NCAA isn't holding up its end of that bargain based on several leaks to the media, and continuing to go well beyond the scope of what this investigation should have covered.  Even objective people looking at this situation who have no connection to Ole Miss or the NCAA have come forward saying, it's clear the NCAA wants to hammer Ole Miss, now they just need to find evidence that gives them the right to do so, and in 4 years, they have not found any evidence that has been released of a pay for play scheme.

There's small things here and there relating to Laremy Tunsil's stepfather and a booster and the obvious academic issues that resulted during the Houston Nutt era 5-7 years ago, but there's no evidence of buckets of cash or a smoking gun that's been shown yet that illustrates rampant cheating and lack of institutional control.

                                                     Courtesy of tumblr.com

There doesn't appear to be an end in sight for this investigation, which in and of itself is a punishment that may or not be warranted.   In recruiting and public opinion the implication of impropriety is all that is needed to damage a reputation, whether it's factually correct or not, and the NCAA has clearly succeeded in that venture.   Here's to hoping there's an end to all this sooner rather than later.  Cheers!

American Holidays Need An Overhaul

                                                                Courtesy of pbs.twimg.com

Besides a bunch of other things in America that need an overhaul, the Holidays typically observed in America need a complete update, and that means making some much needed additions and subtractions.  Please keep in mind this doesn't mean which Holidays we actually get a day off for, but quite honestly we should, it's more about Holidays we celebrate in general (i.e. We don't have a formal day off for Halloween, but it's awesome, so we celebrate it).  So, let's take a look at which holidays we need to keep and which ones we need to move on from as soon as possible.

THE UNTOUCHABLES

The following Holidays aren't going anywhere; they're awesome; we love them.  Don't worry.  They're here to stay.

NEW YEAR'S - College Football, new beginnings, new gym memberships, it's here to stay.

EASTER - The most important religious holiday for a large percentage of Americans.

4TH OF JULY - The original BREXIT.

HALLOWEEN - A pagan holiday that we morphed into the second most commercial holiday, behind Christmas.  Capitalism at its finest!

THANKSGIVING - I'm not really a fan of Thanksgiving, because I think the history of it, or at least what we've been taught in school, is wildly inaccurate, and the food while decent, isn't anything to write home about.  It's not going anywhere, but other than the all day football, it comes across as a family meal where you're extra thankful.

CHRISTMAS - Awesome Holiday, so much so that there's a build up to it literally the second after you finish Thanksgiving Dinner.

THE MEMORABLE HOLIDAYS

These are holidays that we remember for special reasons; whether it be our Military, Civil Rights, our parents, or the sacrifices workers made.  They aren't going anywhere either.

MLK DAY - A day's remembrance of a great Civil Rights leader, and an important day for anyone who believes in equality.

MOTHER'S DAY - A day's remembrance where the origins go back to the Ten Commandments.

MEMORIAL DAY - A day where we remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our nation.

FATHER'S DAY A day's remembrance where the origins go back to the Ten Commandments.

LABOR DAY - A day where we remember those who fought for a standard minimum wage, reasonable working hours, safe working conditions, and protections from child labor.

VETERAN'S DAY - A day where we remember all those who served and do serve to keep our nation safe.

THE REST

These holidays are basically take them or leave them holidays.  I'm going to go through each one and asses whether we should keep them or drop them.

GROUNDHOG DAY - Gone.  Look, it's a great movie about a man who contemplates what life is like when he is essentially immortal and has an infinite number of opportunities to win the love of Andie MacDowell, but the actual holiday is boring and bland.  On February 2nd, a fancy named woodchuck is pulled out of a fake log cabin to tell you it's going to be cold for 6 more weeks.  I think we'll survive without it.

VALENTINE'S DAY - Gone.  While this holiday may have religious roots, it has become grossly commercialized.  At least Christmas still has strong religious importance.  This Holiday is basically an exercise in who can spend more money on flowers and chocolate while booking a table by the window at a fancy restaurant.

PRESIDENT'S DAY - Gone.  Why is this even a Holiday?  Are we really honoring people, the vast majority of whom, failed at their jobs?  Let's honor Meteorologists and Economists while we're at it.  Seriously, how many good presidents have we had?  10?  Maybe.  We're about to have our 45th President elected to office, that's less than a 25% success rate.  Try being successful at your job 25% of the time and asking for recognition.

ST. PATRICK'S DAY - This one is tricky.  Nearly everyone enjoys it, but is it really an American Holiday?  If you think it is, you can pretty much sign up for Cinco De Mayo, Chinese New Year, Bastille Day, Liberation Day, etc.  If you're fine with that, I'm good with it.

COLUMBUS DAY - Gone.  Let me get this right, we honor a man who got lost, landed in a place that isn't part of the United States, didn't have the Americas named after him, was generally seen as cruel to the native populations he encountered, and additionally, wasn't even the first European to settle in the New World, which was already inhabited?  We'll see ya Columbus Day.

NEW HOLIDAYS

One of the biggest problems we have is that after MLK Day, you basically don't have anymore paid Holidays until Memorial Day.  That's 4 months with pretty much no off days, with the exception of Good Friday.  So, let's take a look at adding some holidays to the calendar that are more fitting with the American Ideals.

                                                        Courtesy of wikipedia.com

SUPER BOWL MONDAY - This is the most watched event of the year, and nearly everyone in America struggles into work the following day.  The loss in the amount of productivity the day after the Super Bowl is staggering, so it's not a stretch to realize that sports are an important part of American society and make this day a National Holiday.

                                                     Courtesy of appadvice.com

MARCH MADNESS DAY/ST. PATRICK'S DAY - This is how we keep St. Patrick's Day and incorporate it into a modern American tradition.  Nearly everyone I know either fills out a bracket or at least tacitly follows the NCAA Tournament, though I do live in a basketball state.  By starting the NCAA Tournament on St. Patrick's Day and making it a holiday, you're going to see bars and restaurants packed around the country, instead of people pretending to work while they check the ESPN app on their phone from  noon until 5 o'clock.

                                                              Courtesy of mlb.com

OPENING DAY - I know football is king in America right now, but there's something uniquely American and magical about Opening Day in Major League Baseball.  It's an amazing day in sports and a day that baseball owns exclusively.  We'd be honoring our past, present, and future by grabbing a hot dog and heading to the ballpark.

                                                                Courtesy of clipartkid.com

9/11 DAY - America needs a formal day of remembrance for what is arguably the saddest day in our nation's history.  Though it is a somber day, it's important to remember the horrible acts that occurred in 2001, so that it's never allowed to happen again.

                                                               Courtesy of pinterest.com

CONSTITUTION DAY - We talk a lot about the Constitution, but I'm quite frankly surprised we don't have an actual Holiday to remember it as the founding document of our legal system.  September 17th would be part 4th of July and part Halloween, where Americans remember those rights that make our nation great, and if people feel so inclined to, dress up as your favorite amendment.

                                                                 Courtesy of fairfieldct.org

ELECTION DAY - If we're really going to celebrate the Right to Vote, you should have the day off to exercise that right.  One of the largest arguments for why people don't vote (whether it's valid or not) is that they don't have the time to take off work, and for citizens working jobs that are paid hourly, it's a legitimate concern.

While the Holidays give us both a sense of remembrance and a relief from our daily lives, they're significance can often be overstated.  Here's to hoping that we begin to implement some changes in the near future.

SEC Week 1 Predictions

                                                Courtesy of hellogiggles.com

On a scale of 1-10 how excited am I that College Football is back?  Eleven!  We got a nice little appetizer on Thursday with Vanderbilt blowing a lead in the 4th Quarter to a South Carolina team that may win 4 games this year.  The Tennessee/App State game though was far more intriguing with Volunteer Nation spending 3 hours cancelling their hotel reservations for December 3rd in Atlanta.  They ultimately escaped with a win, despite playing like Derek Dooley was coaching them against the Mountaineers.

                                           Courtesy of fansrule.com

The best is yet to come though with what is a historically awesome slate of Week 1 games across the nation.  Outside of the SEC, some of the top games see Oklahoma take on Houston and Texas suits up against Notre Dame,   But this post is about the SEC, so we're going to focus on those games.

South Alabama
at Mississippi State    -29.5

Lay Em!  Mississippi State against a bad Sun Belt team in the first game of the season; Dan Mullen will run this score up and State will cover.  No Doubt.  No Doubt In My Mind.  Multiple QBs will play.   Mississippi State 48  South Alabama 10.

                                                Courtesy of gifsoup.com

Mizzou
at West Virginia    -9.5

Give me the Mountaineers at home.  Mizzou is going to take a while to get back on top, and the Dancing Outlaws have been hungry for blood for a while.  West Virginia 30 Mizzou 17.

                                               Courtesy of imgur.com

UCLA
at Texas A&M    -3

UCLA has the better QB and the better coach, but playing in the middle of the afternoon in College Station in early September?  The UCLA players are going to be at the point of heat exhaustion by the 4th quarter.  Aggies 23 Bruins 20.

                                                Courtesy of packers.com

LSU    -10
vs Wisconsin    at Lambeau Field

The Fighting Tigers win this one, but I think Wisky keeps it close all day.  Les is going to refuse to throw the football and Fournette will have at least 30 carries.  I have to admit that's a pretty cool location for a neutral site game.  LSU 20 Wisconsin 13.

LA Tech
at Arkansas    -26

26 points is a lot for an Arkansas team breaking in a new QB, RB, and TE, but LA Tech is playing their 2nd string QB after their starter is suspended for being charged with drunk driving.  I'll take the Hogs to win and cover in Fayetteville.  Arkansas 41  LA Tech 14.

                                          Courtesy of thesportsledger.com

Georgia    -3
vs North Carolina     at Georgia Dome

Georgia announced this week that Greyson Lambert would be starting the opener against the Tar Heels in Atlanta.  I think that's a mistake and Jacob Eason will be the starter by Week 3.  The Chick Fil-A vs Bojangles Bowl kicks off at 5:30 on ESPN.  I'm going with the upset, as UNC edges out a win on a last second field goal, 27-24.

                                                       Courtesy of secsportsfan.com

Southern Miss
at Kentucky    -6.5

Kentucky wins because this game is in September, but Southern Miss covers.  The Golden Eagles give Kentucky all they can handle at home, but the Wildcats start 1-0 in Lexington.  Kentucky 22 Southern Miss 20.

UMass
at Florida    -35.5

The Gators win but don't cover.  UMass was 3-9 last year and they're bad, but 7 touchdowns is a monster number.  Florida 42  UMass 10.

USC
vs Alabama   -10.5       at Jerry's World

Lay Em!  You think Bo Scarborough works out?  It really doesn't matter who they plug in, I'm picking Bama until someone beats them.  Alabama 31 Southern Cal 17.

 Courtesy of usatoday.com

Clemson   -7.5
at Auburn

Is this a joke?  Is Cam Newton playing for Auburn?  Give me the Clemson Tigers to win and cover.  This one is close for the first 2-3 minutes, depending on when Clemson gets the ball.  You think Auburn hates Dabo now?  Wait until he succeeds Nick Saban as the next coach at Alabama.   Clemson 34 Auburn 17.

                                                               Courtesy of therebelwalk.com

Ole Miss
vs Florida State   -4.5        at Camping World....Look It's the Citrus Bowl

Is Chad Kelly auditioning for a remake of Mississippi Burning?  I guarantee you he's the only person from Buffalo, NY who owns that suit.  This game comes down to Deondre Francois.  If he plays well, Florida State wins.  If he struggles and the Rebs can slow down Dalvin Cook, Ole Miss wins.  We have to wait until Monday night for what is arguably the best game of the week, but it'll be worth it.  Ole Miss steals a win in Orlando 28-27.

Thank goodness College Football is back in full force.  Enjoy the long weekend.  Cheers!

2016 NFL Predictions

                                               Courtesy of newarena.com

The NFL Preseason is coming to a close, which means that sooner rather than later Sundays will see the return of pro football to America.  Last year, we saw the end of the Peyton Manning era as he rode off into the sunset to sip Budweisers and shoot more Nationwide and Papa John's commercials after winning Super Bowl 50.  He'll be in Canton in 5 years, but this post isn't about Peyton, it's about who is going to have a chance to make it to Super Bowl 51.  So, let's take a look at how the 2016 NFL season could play out.

AFC EAST

Courtesy of wsaz.com

1.  NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS  13-3

I know Tom Terrific is out for the first 4 games, but being that the Patriots get to play 3 home games, 2 of which are against teams that probably have a minuscule chance at best to make the playoffs, and the other team is breaking in a new QB, I think the Patriots go at least 2-2 in that stretch if not 3-1.   When Brady comes back in Week 4, the Pats get Cleveland at home, and from then on out, nearly all of their big games with exception of the Jets and the Broncos are in Foxboro.  I'd be shocked if the Patriots don't win the AFC East again this year.

                                                       Courtesy of www.nfl.com

2.  NY JETS  10-6

The Jets start out with a brutal schedule to begin the year.  Their season begins with Cincy, at Buffalo, at KC, Seattle, at Pittsburgh, at AZ, and then Baltimore.  The season eases up after that, but they could have 5 losses before Halloween, and then they still have to face the Patriots twice.  I think it was a smart move to bring Fitzpatrick back for a year, and not give him a big deal, but I'm not sure they improve on last year's record.

                                                  Courtesy of baltimoreravens.com

3.  BUFFALO BILLS   7-9

I don't see how the Bills or the Dolphins have a chance to make the playoffs this year.  Both teams have glaring holes on both sides of the ball, and you could easily flip their records.  I could very easily see the Bills starting out 0-4 this year, and personally I think they made a mistake giving that deal to Tyrod Taylor.  It's going to be interesting to see if Rex Ryan keeps his job after another season without a winning record.  For reference, Rex hasn't had a winning season since 2010, and the Bills haven't been to the playoffs since 1999.

4.  MIAMI DOLPHINS   6-10

I hopped on the Miami bandwagon last year, and that quickly broke down, as the team turned into a dumpster fire in 2015.  I think Adam Gase has a chance to make this offense very good, but they still have big questions at Offensive Line and on the defensive side of the ball.  Those are not things that get fixed overnight, and while Ryan Tannehill is a serviceable QB, I'm not sure he'll ever be a star in the NFL.

1.  CINCINNATI BENGALS  12-4

Cincy loses one of their best assets as Hugh Jackson heads to Cleveland, but I still think this team's roster is loaded.  Now, the question is largely going to be will the Bengals finally win a playoff game?  I think they have the best roster in the AFC North, and despite a tough schedule, they'll win that division again this year.

2.  PITTSBURGH STEELERS  11-5

The Steelers won't have Le'Veon Bell for a couple of weeks to start the season, but Deangelo Williams has proved to be a very capable back up.  The real issue this year for the Steelers, as it is every year, is how healthy will Big Ben remain as the season progresses.  Landry Jones has not looked very good this preseason, so if the Steelers want to contend for the AFC North, Roethlisberger is going to have to stay upright.  With arguably the best QB, RB, WR trio in the NFL, it's hard not to expect Pittsburgh to have another good season.

3.  BALTIMORE RAVENS   8-8

Baltimore was plagued by injuries last year, and that ultimately led to a 5-11 record.  They'll get Flacco, Suggs, and Steve Smith, Sr. back this year, but I still think this team has a lot of questions.  Mike Wallace's best days appear to be behind him, and I expect Justin Forsett to continue to carry the load while they mix in Kenneth Dixon, the rookie from LA Tech.  They won't be bad, but I think this is a team that hovers around .500.

4.  CLEVELAND BROWNS   6-10

I think that Cleveland's roster is going to hold it back from truly competing for a division title for a couple of years, but I think they made a brilliant hire in Hugh Jackson.  Robert Griffin III is going to be better than people think this year.  While he's not going to have a pro bowl season, Hugh Jackson offenses have shown they know how to be productive.  The Browns are going to have a lot of close games this year, but this team is probably still 2-3 years away from being a playoff contender.

1.  JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS  10-6

The Jags and their awful helmets finally break through this year, as they win the AFC South and get to host a playoff game.  I'm a believer that Blake Bortles is going to continue to get better, and Allen Robinson is quickly becoming a star in the NFL.  Add that with a solid TE in Julius Thomas, another good WR in Allen Hurns, and Chris Ivory to the backfield, and you've got a pretty formidable offense.  I know the Jags have questions on defense, but Jalen Ramsey can help sure up that secondary and Malik Jackson will be a big presence up front.

2.  HOUSTON TEXANS   9-7

While the Texans aren't going to fall of the face of the earth, they also aren't going to suddenly win 12 games a year because they signed a guy they believe is a franchise QB.  Chemistry and synergy take time, and Brock Osweiler is going to have some growing pains in a new offense.  I fully expect Houston to rely on Lamar Miller and their defense to win them games, and for Osweiler to be largely a game manager until he develops a good rapport with DeAndre Hopkins.

3.  INDIANAPOLIS COLTS  8-8

I've got a lot of concern regarding the Indianapolis Colts.   Andrew Luck is a good QB, but right now he doesn't look like he's as good as he's been advertised.  He missed a good portion of last year due to injury, but even when he was healthy he didn't look impressive.  Pile that on top of a Defense that finished near the bottom third of the league, and a shaky Offensive Line, and you've got problems.  I'm also skeptical that bringing back Chuck Pagano was the right business move for the franchise.  Maybe Andrew Luck lights the world on fire this year, but I wouldn't bet on it.

4.  TENNESSEE TITANS  4-12

Tennessee has pretty much advertised to the world that they are going to focus on the run.  That's not a bad recipe for success, but you have to give your QB someone to throw to who's not 35 years old.  I think Demarco Murray and Derrick Henry will do some good things for the Titans this year, but they ranked 30th in the league in 2015 in total offense, and their Defense while respectable isn't enough to fill that gap.  They made a good decision trading down in the NFL Draft this Spring, because they've got multiple needs to get back to the playoffs.

1.  KANSAS CITY CHIEFS   12-4

With the Broncos losing both Peyton Manning and Brock Osweiler the door is wide open in the AFC West, and Kansas City is the most complete team top to bottom.  They finished 10-6 last year without Jamaal Charles and you have to think that his presence is only going to make them better.  Andy Reid teams are usually fairly competent and Alex Smith, while not flashy, doesn't make a lot of mistakes.

2.  OAKLAND RAIDERS  10-6

The Raiders look to be on the up, even if their stadium deal looks to be on the down.  I'm a believer in Derek Carr, and I think Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree are only going to get better.  Couple that with a salty defense and a 1,000 yard back in Latavius Murray and you've got a potential playoff team.  For purely selfish reasons I hope the Raiders move to Vegas, but regardless of where they play the Black and Silver faithful have a lot to be optimistic about.

3.  DENVER BRONCOS   8-8

Denver got over the hump last year, winning the Super Bowl with sound defense and adequate QB play.  As of today, it looks like Trevor Siemian may be the starter for the defending Super Bowl Champions.  That means they are going to have to rely heavily on their defense, which lost several key pieces to free agency.  Denver's Defense is going to keep them in a lot of games, but it's likely going to take some time for whoever their QB is to gel with his receiving corps.

4.  SAN DIEGO CHARGERS  3-13

Poor San Diego.  The Joey Bosa saga just keeps getting more and more depressing.  The Chargers struggled last year, and their fans should get ready for another disappointing season.  I still maintain they should have traded Philip Rivers to Tennessee before the 2015 NFL Draft and taken Marcus Mariota or another QB and tried to rebuild.  However, they've dug themselves a hole that keeps getting deeper.

1.  DALLAS COWBOYS  11-5

As I'm writing this, news just broke that Tony Romo is out for the first 6-10 weeks of the season, but based on what we've seen from Dak Prescott so far, I'm not sure that is going to be as big of a blow as people think.  He's been nothing short of astounding.  I know this is the preseason, but being that he's got the best Offensive Line in football, a 3 headed monster in the backfield, with Zeke, McFadden, and Alfred Morris, and a stud WR in Dez Bryant, he just needs to not make mistakes.  The Dallas defense still has some major holes, but with an offense like this, I'm not sure they need to be more than average.

2.  WASHINGTON REDSKINS   8-8

Kirk Cousins was famously franchised in the Spring, which means he's playing for a bigger contract this year, and I think he can be the answer at QB for the Redskins.  While, I'm not sure he'll ever be great, I do think he can be very good and win them games in the playoffs.  The bigger question mark for Washington is their defense, and running game.  Letting Alfred Morris head to Dallas could really come back to hurt them.

3.  NY GIANTS  7-9

The Giants went out and spent a ton of money in free agency, specifically on the defensive side of the ball, as Jerry Reese is trying to justify why Tom Coughlin should have been let go and not him.  New York has a very good QB and a top 3 WR, but that's about where their team's positive aspects end.  A weak Offensive Line, a suspect Defense, along with no idea what to do about Victor Cruz put the G-Men in a bad position heading into 2016.

4.  PHILADELPHIA EAGLES   5-11

Like the Rams, Philly mortgaged their future for a QB.  The problem is they didn't get the first choice.  Josh Norman ripped Sam Bradford earlier this week, but can anyone really say he was wrong about his characterization of the former No. 1 overall pick?  Bradford has been injured constantly and his record as a starter is 25-37-1.  Those numbers don't command a lot of respect.  As you can imagine, Philly fans can't wait to see Carson Wentz, but even if he's named the starter before October this is likely going to be a rebuilding year for the Eagles.

1.  GREEN BAY PACKERS   12-4

The Packers are well aware they are wasting time with Aaron Rodgers, and they'll be much more aggressive on offense this year.  The return of Jordy Nelson should help the Packers air assault, and Eddie Lacy's slimmed down frame is a welcome sight to Lambeau Field.  While you can still throw and run on Green Bay, if their offense is clicking on all cylinders, it might not matter.

2.  MINNESOTA VIKINGS  11-5

The Vikings had a heartbreaking loss in the playoffs to Seattle last year, but they still had a very good season, and they've set their team up for success for multiple years by building around their defense and running game.  Additionally, they addressed the Wide Receiver position in the draft this year by taking Laquon Treadwell and Moritz Boehringer, to give Teddy Bridgewater some weapons.  This division should be a two horse race, but when it comes down to Aaron Rodgers or Teddy Bridgewater, I'll take Rodgers every time.

3.  DETROIT LIONS   6-10

The Calvin Johnson era has officially ended in The Motor City, which means that Matt Stafford is going to have to rely on replacement by committee between Golden Tate, Marvin Jones, and Anquan Boldin.  Haloti Ngata and Ziggy Ansah should continue to stop the run and give the Lions pressure up front, but the Lions don't have a lot of other big names on Defense, and they are breaking in a new LT to protect Stafford's blindside.

4.  CHICAGO BEARS   5-11

While a lot of fans in Chicago are eager to see Kevin White, I think the more intriguing player is going to be Jeremy Langford.  Langford rushed for 537 yards with 6 TDS last year, but he only averaged 3.6 yards per carry.  Replacing the solid production Matt Forte provided isn't going to be easy, but in John Fox's run-heavy offense, he's going to get plenty of chances to prove himself.  Chicago had a middle of the road Defense last year, and if they want to be more than mediocre, they are going to have to get more production on that side of the ball.

1.  CAROLINA PANTHERS   11-5

Last season, even the most homerish fan wouldn't have predicted the Panthers to go 15-1, and make the Super Bowl.  This year they get Kelvin Benjamin back, but he's not their best receiver, Greg Olsen is.  What made the Carolina Offense so good in 2015 was that Newton didn't have a go to Wide Receiver, so he was forced to go through his progressions.  If he continues that development, he'll have another great season, but if he locks in on Benjamin and Olsen, it could hinder Carolina's chances to get back to the Super Bowl.

2.  ATLANTA FALCONS   9-7

I have a strong feeling that Atlanta is going to do a lot of what did they last year.  Julio Jones is a top tier receiver, and Devonta Freeman provided a good spark for the Falcons out of the backfield, but the team lived and died with the decisions made by Matt Ryan.  He has the ability to be really good or really bad.  That uncertainty along with a weak line on both sides of the ball, caps the Falcons at about 9 wins.  The Falcons went heavy on Defense in the NFL Draft addressing needs at Linebacker and the Secondary with 3 of their first 4 picks.  If they produce early the Falcons could become a playoff contender, but I think they are still a year away.

3.  NEW ORLEANS SAINTS   7-9

The Saints have not looked good in the preseason, but that doesn't mean that Drew Brees won't will this team to 7 wins.  The Dome Patrol Defense isn't getting fixed in 2016, but they've got to be better than they were under Rob Ryan.  Even if the Saints have a top 20 defense, with Brees's ability to move the ball, they'll be a better football team.  That having been said, their Offensive Line is going to have to scheme better to protect Brees, or it's going to be a long year in NOLA.

4.  TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS   7-9

The Bucs are a trendy pick on a lot of analysts' lists to make a big step forward in 2016, and I think they'll show some improvement, but I'm not sure how many additional wins that'll generate.  It looks like the Bucs made the right decision in taking Jameis Winston with the first overall pick last year, and Mike Evans is only making him look better each and every week.  If Tampa Bay's hype turns out to be real, they're not going to be an easy out for anyone.

1.  ARIZONA CARDINALS   13-3

Arizona may have the best top to bottom roster in the NFL.  Carson Palmer is 36, so the Cardinals know their window is limited, but they've invested heavily in the next 3 years with him and Larry Fitzgerald, and their running game and Defense are more than solid.   They get a Bradyless Patriots team in Week 1, so that should be a good test for how good the Cardinals can be.  I think they're going to be better than Seattle this year, but the clock on their chances at a Super Bowl is ticking.

2.  SEATTLE SEAHAWKS   10-6

Despite his flaws, Marshawn Lynch was a vital part of the Seattle Offense and Russell Wilson has played a lot better than I or most people expected since his entrance into the league.  The Legion of Boom Defense, along with Wilson's ability to make plays, and a strong running game, makes me believe that the Seahawks aren't going away anytime soon.  Alex Collins out of Arkansas was a great pick up and by pairing him with Thomas Rawls I think Seattle will still be a playoff team come 2016.

3.  LOS ANGELES RAMS   6-10

Jeff Fisher said on Hard Knocks this month that he wasn't going 7-9, and he's right.  He's going to be even worse.  Todd Gurley is going to continue to get better, but the Rams have a big problem at WR.  They just paid Tavon Austin, but he's not exactly been setting the world on fire, and playing with a rookie QB you're going to make mistakes.   The Rams have a top tier Defense, and maybe they can help compensate for a substandard Offense, but I think this team isn't going to get a big return on their investment this year.

4.  SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS   5-11

The 49ers, like the Rams, aren't sure who is starting in Week 1, or at least they aren't telling anyone.  They went out and got Chip Kelly after he was fired by the Eagles, and San Francisco is hopeful he can save Colin Kaepernick.  Despite the new blood on the sidelines, the 49ers are a long ways from where they were in 2012.  Their best option for this season might be to play Blaine Gabbert, and look to draft a QB early in 2017.

The two No. 1 seeds meet in Houston for Super Bowl 51, and it's a shootout from start to finish.  Brady throws for over 150 yards in the first half, and Palmer keeps pace targeting Larry Fitzgerald for two TDs.  In the 2nd half, Gronk takes over and punishes the linebacker corps of the Arizona Cardinals scoring with 3 minutes left.  Palmer tries to lead a game tying drive, but a tipped pass falls in the hands of the New England secondary and Brady secures his 5th ring.  Arizona 27  New England 34.
